Assessment and optimization of freshwater recovery
Understanding and prediction of how injected and stored fresh water migrates through heterogeneous saline aquifers is one of the main technological challenges in MAR research. Two simple screening methods exist to estimate the recovery efficiency of simple MAR systems. These screening methods need to be enhanced, based on extensive field data, to include the effect of different configurations of injection and recovery wells, differences in elevation of the injection screen (bottom) and the recovery screen (top), the effect of a low vertical hydraulic conductivity as compared to the horizontal hydraulic conductivity, and the effect of recovery of a portion of the water during the injection phase.
This PhD research project is executed by Mohammad Imran Hasan, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Mark Bakker, Prof. Kazi Matin Ahmed and dr. Boris van Breukelen.
